Public Engagement Training and Op-Ed Workshops

“Thank you for yesterday’s rich and inspiring public writing workshop. Its combo of expertise, advice, and encouragement was impressive.

My colleagues and I also appreciated your organization and zesty delivery. In addition to being a great editor, it’s evident you’re a gifted teacher.”

— Catherine S. Ramírez, University of California Santa Cruz

I train faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in the art of public writing.

I bring my years of editing experience to bear, offering coaching and an insider’s perspective on the editing process.

Holding an undergraduate version of my op-ed writing workshop for a history seminar at Yale University (via Zoom), Fall 2021

These workshops cover everything, including:

  • the benefits of writing for the public

  • the process of op-ed writing

  • the nuts and bolts of constructing different types of op-eds

  • pitching editors

  • publicizing work both within and outside of the academy

I also address the stylistic differences between academic and public writing, how to adapt to this new form, the benefits and downsides to social media, citations, and other elements of public scholarship as well.

These workshops are fully customized, and can be offered as one-off sessions or as a more intensive series.
